LT77
xj6 gearbox
sd1 gearbox
The LT77 is quite particular about the oil that is used. but the best oil used is
Redline MTL. It is a fully synthetic with friction properties designed
especially for gear syncros and synchro engagement is
really good.RED LINE MTL and MT- 90 are designed to provide excellent protection
and improved shiftability for manual transmissions and transaxles. MTL and MT-
90 have cured the problem of hard shifting in numerous transmissions which have
notoriously difficult shifting. The secret to their success is two - fold.
First, they have the appropriate coefficient of friction for most manual
transmission synchronizers. Many gear oils, engine oils, and ATFs are too
slippery for proper synchro engagement. Secondly, the viscosity characteristics
of MTL and MT - 90 allow proper shifting over the entire temperature range which
the transmission will experience. The synthetic base oils used have a very high
viscosity index which provides relatively constant viscosity as temperature
changes. MTL is a low 75W, almost a 70W, at very low temperatures and a high
80W, nearly an 85W, at elevated temperatures, providing adequate viscosity to
prevent wear and deaden gear noise. MT - 90 is a thicker 75W90 version of MTL.
The shear stability and oxidation stability of these products are excellent,
thus the physical characteristics of Red Line MTL and MT-90 will change little
with use.
Red Line MTL is classified as a 75W/80W gear lubricant satisfying the API
Service requirements of GL - 3 and GL - 4. MTL also satisfies motor oil
viscosities SAE 5W/10W/30, and the viscosity requirements for ATF's. MT - 90 is
a 75W90 GL - 4 and also satisfies motor oil viscosities SAE 10W/15W/40. The
additive chemistry used is non - corrosive, so even though they will provide GL
- 4 performance, they will not corrode synchros or bushings. Because of its low
corrosivity, Red Line MTL and MT - 90 could also be used in transmissions
requiring GL - 1 or GL - 3 lubricants. Seal compatibility is designed to be
similar to petroleum-based lubricants. Maximises transmission life: Extremely shear stable viscosity index improver
resists break down under the high shear stresses of modern transmissions,
ensuring that oil viscosity and film thickness are sufficient for effective
protection of gears against wear and scuffing. Proprietary antiwear and extreme
pressure additives provide the load carrying capacity necessary to minimise wear
of transmission components under all conditions. The new additive used in the NEO 7W
shows virtually no change in grade even after 50,000 miles of operation in
automotive transmissions. Further, it has inherently higher film strength than
petroleum lubricants, thereby providing added protection to the bearings and
gears. An anti-foaming additive assures that the film strength will not be
compromised. Reduced Friction: NEO 7W Transmission
Oil has an extremely low coefficient of friction, which means cooler running
gear boxes. The reduced friction and cooler running combine to extend gearbox
life, and also the life of the lubricant. Easier Cold Weather Shifting: The
lower pour point temperature of the synthetic means better operation at lower
temperatures, and better protection for gears and bearings upon initial startup
at the lower temperature. Corrosion Resistance: The synthetic
base stock does not break down into unwanted components and form corrosive
compounds under the stress of high heat. The additive package works
synergistically with the synthetic base to provide further corrosion protection.
Seal Compatibility: The NEO synthetic
base stock increases seal life. It will not cause excessive seal swelling, nor
will it cause seals to shrink or harden.

The R380 is a suburb transmission and should have no problems with power outputs well above 300bhp, and, as you can see, in terms of fitment is the same as the LT77 , making the conversion very simple, and the ideal choice for your Rover V8 application, with the additional advantage of the short Remote or std. remote fitment.
