The Port Kembla steelworks is by far the largest steel manufacturing plant in Australia producing around five million tonnes of raw steel a year. Approximately half its output is exportedto markets around the world. Port Kembla Steelworks employs around 4700 permanent fulltime employees and between one andtwo thousand contractors. The Steelworks is located on the port of Port Kembla, the deepest natural port on the Australian eastern seaboard capable of accommodating ships up to 240,000dwt.
